Col. Holt volunteered for the Civil War. After Fort Sumter was fired on, he traveled from Hamilton, Canada to Washington, D.C. to enlist. He apparently was commissioned after sleeping at least one night in the U.S. Senate chambers. He was promoted from lieutenant colonel to colonel for bravery in the battles of The Wilderness and at Spotsylvania Courthouse, where he received a head wound.
